July Meeting:
Highlights from the TOC Summer Seminar

At our July meeting, GO member and webmaster John Drake will share highlights of this year’s TOC Summer Seminar – Objectivism: Theory and Practice. The seminar, held June 30 – July 7 at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, features lectures, workshops and participant-sponsored sessions, as well as plenty of other activities for a complete Objectivist experience.

John will recount the fundamentals of some of the lectures and workshops, as well as his impressions of them. Also, he will discuss the excursion to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and the participant-sponsored session that he led.

Join us on Saturday, July 21, at 8 p.m. at the home of Joy & Jeff Kiviat. Snacks and discussion will follow the presentation. Call (314) 469-2723 for directions.

Another Stossel Success

Our last meeting continued the tradition of watching John Stossel’s latest prime-time special. “John Stossel Goes to Washington” looked at the waste and destruction of some government programs and what the role of the government should be. Interestingly, a number of scenes and interviews were filmed in St. Louis, including a segment on all of the taxes that Americans pay.

Tibor Machan was featured as an expert on what is wrong with the tax-and-spend government and what the founding fathers believed were the only proper functions of government. Rep. Ron Paul talked about why he votes against any bill that violates those proper functions.

Stossel used examples such as public housing, air traffic control and the welfare of American Indians to show what has gone wrong when the government is in control, and how much better and less expensive services can be when done by the private sector. Stossel scheduled an interview with then-Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt to find out about millions of dollars missing that were intended for American Indian programs. After 30 seconds, Babbitt stood up, muttered, “I’m gonna fire whoever scheduled this interview,” and walked out.
