January Meeting:
“The Great Environmental Debate:
What is the Real
State of the World?”
At our January meeting, we
will watch a videotape of “The Great Environmental Debate: What is the
Real State of the World?” In this presentation by the Skeptic Society,
Dr. Bjorn Lomborg debates Frank Miele over the impending environmentalist
disasters in the future. Dr. Lomborg, who uses statistics from the same
sources that the UN and Greenpeace use, says that the trends in such
problems as global warming, extinction and overpopulation show that
things are getting better and we should be more optimistic than the
environmentalist doomsayers. The debate was recorded in October 2001.
Dr. Lomborg, an associate
professor of statistics at the University of Aarhus in Denmark, wrote The
Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World.

and at www.lomborg.com.
Currently, there is a controversy over his book in Denmark's
scientific community. See www.john-daly.com/#denmark for more information about
this attack on Dr. Lomborg.
Join us on Saturday,
January 18, at the home of Joy & Jeff Kiviat, for the presentation,
followed by snacks and discussion Call (314) 469-2723 for directions or
more information.
We Request a Change of Venue
Jeff & Joy Kiviat, our gracious hosts since
GO was formed way back in the early 1990s, are moving from West St. Louis
County to Glen Carbon, Illinois. Most likely, the buyers of their house
will not want all of us coming over, if only once a month. So, at the
January meeting, we plan to discuss all of our options and make a
decision regarding the location of future meetings.
We welcome submissions of reviews, articles, columns and commentary.
Direct all correspondence to gwobjctvst@aol.com.
