February Meeting:
“Zulu” and “Carnage and Culture”
At our February meeting,
we will watch the movie “Zulu” and GO member Bob Greene will give a
talk on the recent book “Carnage and Culture,” by Victor David
Hanson, in the context of the battle depicted in the movie.
“Zulu,” a 1964 movie
starring Michael Caine, Stanley Barker and Jack Hawkins, centers on the
1879 Battle of Roarke’s Drift, in South Africa, during one of
Britain’s colonial wars. In the battle, Lt. John Chard and his 105 men
must defend the fort from 400 Zulu warriors.
Hanson’s book,
“Carnage and Culture,” explains that the British colonial army in
this battle, and western military forces in general, triumphed over their
non-western enemies primarily due to discipline, training, tactics,
technology, and the motivation of the individual soldier.
Join us on Saturday, February 16, at 8 p.m.
at the home of Joy & Jeff Kiviat for an informative presentation and
a vivid historical epic. Call (314) 469-2723 for directions.
We welcome submissions of reviews, articles, columns and commentary.
